The mental and physical demands of ultrarunning are similar to the demands of the organic farmer. It’s hard repetitive labor. It requires focus. It's separating what you want to do from what you have to do. And for those whose bodies are powerful machines, it's the energy they put into the earth – the food that they share with others – that generates motion. Possibly no one has more intimate experience of the similarities of mental fortitude and tenacity between farming and running than Rebecca Ulizio. She has a degree in organic agriculture and at 37-years-old was the fastest American competitor in the 2013 Grand to Grand Ultra, North America’s first fully self-supported stage footrace.
